Schools honoured for commitment to women in science

Five Schools within The University of Manchester have been awarded Athena SWAN awards for their commitment to the representation of women in the workplace.

The awards recognise the positive work being carried out in Schools

The Schools of Computer Science, Materials, Mathematics, Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering, and Physics and Astronomy have all been presented with an Athena SWAN Bronze Award, bringing the total number of Schools with Athena SWAN accolades to 13.

The Athena SWAN Charter is owned by the Equality Challenge Unit and the awards recognise and celebrate good practice in recruiting, retaining and promoting women in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine (STEMM) in academia.

The bronze awards demonstrate each School has identified their own particular challenges and have planned activities that will advance the representation of women in their subject.

Dr Helen Ryder, the University's Athena SWAN Coordinator, said: “Embedding a real culture change takes both time and commitment. Our 13 Athena SWAN Awards across our STEMM Schools are a marvellous achievement. The University’s commitment to the Charter has had a positive impact on changing the culture and attitudes within our Schools.”
