Students build bridges with local community in Fallowfield

20 Mar 2014

The University of Manchester is holding a Community Coffee Morning for local residents at Owens Park this Friday, 21 March at 10.30am.

Owens Park

The aim of the event is to help strengthen bonds between students and staff at the University and long-term residents and community groups in the local area.

A wide range of people have been invited including elderly residents from sheltered schemes in South Manchester, representatives of local Residents' Associations, church and community groups, as well as staff and students from the University, including Community Reps from the halls of residence and the Students’ Union.

Local residents will have the chance to speak to our students and enjoy free refreshments from 10.30am on Friday March 21 at the Owens Park campus.

Organiser Jack Harrison from Manchester Student Homes said: "We don’t want Owens Park to be seen as a walled castle that is off-limits to non-student members of the community, so hopefully by bringing local residents onto the campus we can address any issues. We also want to make students more aware of the wider community that they live in whilst giving long-term residents some insight into what it’s like to be a student and the student lifestyle.

"It should also encourage a discussion between students, staff and long term residents about the strengths and weaknesses in their local areas and what issues they can work together to solve."
