IT Know How Tip: Are you making the most of Lync?

20 Feb 2014

Lync allows you to chat with colleagues across campus and beyond, the chat mechanism works similar to that of other instant messaging services like Skype.

If you are on a managed staff desktop, you will have Lync installed on your computer – this is a corporate instant messaging service.

Using Lync you can:

  • Send instant messages
  • Call your colleagues
  • Share your desktop with a colleague for those times when it would be easier to show someone what you mean than try to explain it
  • Show slides - you can add a PowerPoint presentation to a meeting, and give or work together with others on a presentation
  • Send files to your colleagues and make hand-outs available to call participants

Lync works with your Outlook email and calendar, showing your status as busy when you have a meeting scheduled in your calendar or away when you have been inactive on your PC for a little while as well as saving messages to your email inbox.

If you are on an un-managed PC or Mac and would like to install Lync, follow this Knowledge Base article:
