We engage children with our inspirational collections

Making a difference

I am the Education and Learning Manager at The John Rylands Library, Deansgate, which is part of The University of Manchester. I am lucky to work in such an amazing historic building in the heart of Manchester.

My colleagues and I work to ensure we use our Special Collections to offer inspiring and unique learning experiences for children and the public of all ages. There are almost 2 million items in our collections, so I am never short of options and opportunities to use these imaginatively with our audiences. I organise events such educational tours of the library, workshops on printing, bookmaking, historical maps of Manchester and sessions on creative writing.

Our University owns some of the finest collections of rare books and manuscripts, and I am passionate about ensuring these are made to be relevant and accessible to the people in our local communities and beyond.
