Eurolens Research – do you know a child (aged 8-15 years) that wears contact lenses (ref 760)?

Description

NHS REC ref: IRAS 357884

Introduction: The University’s contact lens research unit, Eurolens Research, is looking for children to take part in a clinical study. Details of the study are given below [or ‘Click link for further information’]. If you are interested, please contact the Recruitment Team on eurolens@manchester.ac.uk or 0161 306 2132 (ref 760).

Study Design: This study will compare the short-term clinical performance of two contact lenses which are designed to slow the progression of myopia (short-sightedness) in children (‘myopia control’ or ‘myopia management’ contact lenses). Initial comfort, vision and handling of the two brands will be compared. At the end of the study, volunteers will be informed about the lenses they tried, and this direct experience may help them to decide if they might like to pursue myopia control treatment. Participation will also contribute to scientific information that may be used in the development of new contact lens products and to improve patient education about existing products. The study will involve routine, non-invasive optometric procedures and vision tests, similar to those performed during a standard eye examination, along with fitting/assessment of two contact lens brands and providing feedback on their experience with the two brands.

Inclusion Criteria: Up to 35 volunteers (aged 8-15 years, inclusive) who currently wear soft, spherical (not toric) contact lenses for correcting their short-sightedness are required. Further inclusion criteria apply and people with some eye or health problems are unable to participate. Informed consent will be obtained in writing from participants (assent) and parental permission/consent will be obtained from their parent or guardian.

Duration and Appointments: The study involves one visit only, lasting approximately 2.5 hours.

Reimbursement: Volunteers completing this study will be reimbursed for their time. If a volunteer does not complete the study, a pro-rata reimbursement will be issued, based on the amount of time they have spent at the clinic. During the study, contact lenses will be provided free of charge. Travel costs or loss of earnings from your participation will be at volunteer’s own expense.
