Volunteers needed for an fMRI study investigating neural representations of memory failures
Description
Ethics ref: 22874
We are looking for volunteers to participate our study using functional magnetic resonance imaging
(fMRI), a brain imaging technique, to investigate brain activity during true and false memory
experiences. You will be asked to perform cognitive tasks that involve the presentation of images and
texts of several events on a video screen whilst we measure your brain activity. The study will take
around 2 hours (including around 1 hour in the MRI scanner and up to 1 hour outside the scanner) and
you will be financially compensated for your time.
Please contact us, if you are interested and you,
1.Are between the ages of 18 and 35
2. Are fluent in English
3. Have good eyesight (contact lens correction is acceptable; glasses cannot be worn)
4. Are right-handed
5. Are able to provide informed consent
6. Have no history of an experience of any traumatic events such as criminal cases,
emergency health situations, robberies or car crashes. These subjects are used as stimuli in
this experiment, and if you think that viewing them may be distressing, then please do not
participate.
7. Have no history of neurological or psychiatric illness (e.g., dyslexia, epilepsy, dementia,
depression, anxiety, schizophrenia etc)
8.. Have no history of metal implants or metal pieces entering the body during an accident or
at work (sensory and neurological, cardiovascular, orthopaedic, electrical, cosmetic and all
other implants are included e.g. pacemaker, metal plates, wires, screws or rods, a nerve
stimulator, a cochlear implant, stents, filters and vascular coils, metallic fragments, surgical
clips or staples, etc. If you need more detail, please contact to the researcher via email below)
9. Are not pregnant
10. Do not suffer from claustrophobia (extreme fear of enclosed spaces)
11. Do not suffer from physical ailments or conditions that would make it difficult or
uncomfortable to lie still and flat on a bed inside a relatively narrow MRI scanner tube of
70cm diameter (e.g., back problems, high BMI)
Where?
The study will take place at The Manchester Metropolitan University MRI facility suite on Oxford
Road. You will be given directions.
