Transforming student learning: Team-Based Learning at Manchester
28 Nov 2025
How do we prepare students for a world where critical thinking, collaboration, and adaptability matter more than ever? One answer is Team-Based Learning (TBL) — and Manchester is leading the way.
Recently, the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health welcomed senior staff from two Irish universities for a three-day visit to explore how we’re scaling TBL across our programmes. Their verdict? Manchester is setting the standard.
What is TBL?
TBL is an evidence-based active learning approach that moves students from passive listening to active problem-solving. Through pre-class preparation, readiness checks, and team challenges, students learn to:
- Apply knowledge to real-world scenarios
- Think critically and independently
- Work effectively in teams
These are skills that matter — especially in the age of AI.
What Students Say
The highlight of the visit was a Meet the Students Roundtable, where learners described TBL as:
- Engaging and challenging
- Confidence-building
- Fun and collaborative
Students told us TBL has strengthened their independence and teamwork — qualities employers value highly.
Why this matters to you
TBL isn’t just for healthcare or science. It’s a flexible approach that can enhance learning across disciplines. If you teach, design curricula, or support learning, this is an opportunity to explore innovative, evidence-based practice.
