Staying safe in the heat: Find cooler spaces on campus
24 Jun 2026
A number of cooler spaces have been identified on campus.
With an amber weather warning in place due to extreme heat this week, Estates & Facilities has identified a number of cooler spaces for colleagues working on campus:
- The Nancy Rothwell Building: Is generally cooler and has good capacity, particularly on the ground floor, where you can access desk spaces with power and WiFi. If using this space, please be mindful that it’s an active student learning environment.
- Cafes: There are also cooler spaces within a number of our cafes on campus: Café 65 within AMBS, the Beehive within Oddfellows Hall, and the café spaces within the Nancy Rothwell Building.
Café staff will welcome anyone who needs a cooler space, with no expectation to purchase anything. We will keep these arrangements in place until the upcoming Open Day on Saturday, 27 June.
Discuss and agree any temporary changes in working arrangements with your line manager (e.g. working in a different building than usual, working from home, taking additional cooling breaks, or adopting flexible working to accommodate possible travel disruption) where feasible.
We issued some advice and guidance on keeping each other safe in the heat earlier this week. Please take your time to read it and familiarise yourself with the signs of heat-related illnesses.
If you or your colleagues start experiencing any of these symptoms on campus, please immediately contact Campus Support and Security via the SafeZone app or 0161 306 9966, or dial 999 to reach emergency services.
