Heating update: we're switching to summer heating mode

13 May 2026

As the weather continues to improve, we wanted to give you advance notice that we will be switching from our winter to summer heating strategy on Wednesday, 20 May. So what does this mean in reality?

Graphic

The University’s heating season typically runs from October until May each year, with weather forecasts closely monitored by the Estates and Facilities directorate during the autumn and spring periods. This allows us to determine the optimal times to switch from the summer and winter heating modes, based on the average temperatures over any 14-day period.

When we switch to our summer heating mode on Wednesday, 20 May, there will be no impact to any of our hot water systems, including welfare facilities.

During the summer period we will continue the sustainability journey we are on, by replacing and upgrading our heating systems equipment to improve efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint and costs.

What happens if temperatures drop during summer?

Unfortunately, due to the complex nature of our systems and summer maintenance requirements, we are unable to switch the system back on if temperatures fall again. If you have any issues, please contact us through the Estates Helpdesk as a small number of heaters can be provided for short term use in emergencies situations only.

We politely ask that you do not bring in your own heaters from home should temperatures drop, as these won’t be correctly tested as they are not university owned portable equipment and will be requested to be removed as they may cause a health and safety risk.

Supporting our sustainability strategy

Our heating strategy aims to provide a fair balance between user comfort and the environmental impact of excessive use throughout the year.

Your support, co-operation, and understanding on this matter are much appreciated.
