International Day to Combat Islamophobia text

The United Nations Day to Combat Islamophobia, marked each year on 15 March, was established in 2022 to raise global awareness of Islamophobia and to promote respect, safety and dignity for Muslim communities.

This day will resonate for many in our community, following the recent averted attack at Manchester Central Mosque, a frightening incident for Muslim colleagues and students, during Ramadan. The Home Office stated in 2025 that religious hate crimes against Muslims is up by 19% over the last three years; more than ever, it’s important for our university and everybody part of it to strive for inclusion and belonging.

The UN definition of islamophobia is the: “incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence against Muslims as manifested in attacks, desecrations, negative stereotyping, hatred and other acts of intolerance.” The university is currently working with our Muslim chaplain, Mohammed Ullah, to agree the definition that’ll be adopted by the university going forward.
