Welcoming our staff visitors – your new step-by-step guide

Our Research Security Hub has a new flowchart to guide anyone who is welcoming staff visitors to our University, along with further information, guidance and tools to keep research secure.
Welcoming visitors who’ll be working with us as staff is an important part of keeping our research, people and campus safe. To make this easier, our Research Security Hub now includes a brand-new flowchart that guides you through every step of the process.
This relates to visitors who will be joining us remotely or in person.
Please note this process is for staff visitors only. Students may be able to follow this process if they are handled as staff visitors under the University Visitors Policy.
A clearer, easier way to stay secure
The Research Security Hub brings together the information, guidance and tools you will need to protect your research and your work, whether you’re collaborating internationally, managing sensitive data, travelling or working abroad, or welcoming visitors to campus. Alongside the new visitor guide, you will also find flowcharts for:
- New project idea – guidance for PGR students who are submitting a new project idea.
- Temporary travel – support for colleagues or PGRs who planto work while travelling internationally, for example PGR students who want to work while they are home during holidays.
Why this matters
Professor Nalin Thakkar, Vice-President for Social Responsibility and Chair of Research Compliance Committee and Research Relationships Oversight Group, said: “Research security is tremendously important, and we all have our part to play – our staff in mitigating any risks they may face and our University in ensuring this is easily done.
“The Research Security Hub gives you access to processes to help minimise threats and empowers you to make informed decisions.”
Professor Colette Fagan, Vice-President for Research, agreed: “Research security is an essential part of our work, not only for our own protection but also so we maintain public trust in our outputs and impact. This is ever more important as we address misinformation and mistrust about science, the role of universities and academic freedom in the UK and beyond.
“The University is here to support you and ensure your academic freedom as you continue to solve global problems in a safe and secure environment.”
