New and improved Research Security Hub
06 Jan 2026
Our one-stop shop includes flowcharts to help colleagues navigate their personal journeys – and further support and resources – as we face a complex international environment and new potential risks.
The University’s new and improved Research Security Hub is now live, helping academics and PS staff keep themselves and their work safe as we face a complex international environment and therefore new and changing potential risks.
The Hub contains flowcharts to help colleagues navigate their personal journeys – these include clickable links to take you direct to the teams and the resources you need. The first two flowcharts are:
- New project idea – this relates to Research Programs and is for PGR students who are submitting a new project idea.
- Temporary travel – for anyone who wants to work while travelling internationally, for example PGR students who want to work while they are home during holidays.
As well as information on personal journeys, the Hub contains all the information, guidance and support you will need as you carry out your work.
From collaborating on projects, managing data and information governance to travelling or working abroad, welcoming visitors, ATAS requirements and managing Export Controls.
The Hub also includes Government guidance from the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA), including its Trusted Research campaign to support the UK’s research community.
Vice-President for Social Responsibility and Chair of Research Compliance Committee and Research Relationships Oversight Group, Professor Nalin Thakkar said: “Research security is tremendously important, and we all have our part to play – our staff in mitigating any risks they may face and our University in ensuring this is easily done.
“The new Research Security Hub gives you access to processes to help minimise threats and empowers you to make informed decisions. I would urge you to visit the Research Security Hub, even before you need it, to make sure you understand what is required of them and where to go for support and guidance.”
He added: “Our international engagement has always been academically driven, allowing collaborations to flourish, and this will always be the case.
"We will support you as you work with partners and funders across the world to combat global challenges, helping to ensure that you and your work remain safe.
“Working together, we can ensure our work and our people are protected and our academic freedom is secure.”
Vice-President for Research, Professor Colette Fagan agreed: “Research security is an essential part of our work, not only for our own protection but also so we maintain public trust in our outputs and impact. This is ever more important as we address misinformation and mistrust about science, the role of universities and academic freedom in the UK and beyond.
“The University is here to support you and ensure your academic freedom as you continue to solve global problems in a safe and secure environment.”
