Returning after the break: IT advice
05 Jan 2026
How to get set up if you’re returning to work with a new laptop, phone or tablet.
Forgotten your password?
If you have, don't be embarrassed; you aren't the first to do it, and we're sure you won't be the last!
You can recover your IT account and set a new password through the IT Account Manager, which will make it easier for you to get up and running again.
VPN connectivity issues?
If you’re unable to connect to the Virtual Private Network (VPN), it may be that your computer needs to download important security updates first. While in most cases this is done automatically in the background, you can do it manually by checking for Microsoft Defender updates.
New gadgets?
If you've got a new laptop, phone or tablet, we have instructions on how to get it set up on some of our services.
Anyone who uses their phone for 2-factor authentication (2FA) will need to register any new devices they want to use.
If you have a new phone but have kept the same number, you can simply reinstall the Duo Mobile App and download your back-up Duo data from your cloud storage, if you enabled Duo Restore on your smartphone.
If you have a new phone number, or if you did not allow Duo Restore, no longer have access to your original 2FA Duo mobile app device and need to set up a new phone/tablet, please contact the IT Support Centre for assistance.
Next, you'll probably want to connect your device to the eduroam Wi-Fi network:
You might want to set up Microsoft 365 on your device so you can access Microsoft 365 applications, such as Word, Excel, OneDrive, Outlook, PowerPoint, Microsoft Teams, as well as all your documents and files:
After you've done that, if you want to access your University email on your device, we've got instructions for that too:
If you connect remotely to your own University computer or access network drives, you will need to install our Virtual Private Network (VPN) software.
