Winter readiness: keeping campus safe, warm, and resilient

24 Nov 2025

As we get further into the colder months, our Facilities, Maintenance, and Compliance team has been working hard to prepare our Estate for winter. Please make sure you're aware of how to report any issues so our buildings remain comfortable, resilient, and safe for everyone who studies, works, and visits them.

Managing our infrastructure

We continue to maintain our heating structure and equipment to ensure reliability throughout winter. Because some of the parts of our systems are over 50 years old, our strategy is to:

  • Identify systems most at risk of failure
  • Invest in new heating and ventilation infrastructure ahead of breakdowns
  • Support our Manchester 2035 strategy by reducing carbon emissions and improving energy efficiency

Reporting issues

If you notice any problems in your building this winter, please report them to the Estates Helpdesk. Our teams will prioritise reports that require an immediate response where safety is concerned, and the rest are followed by a priority-matrix based on selected criteria.

Thank you for your cooperation to help us keep the campus running smoothly during the winter months. Together, we’re building a safer, warmer, and more sustainable environment for all.

What has been done so far

Our team has already completed a series of essential checks and servicing, including heating system checks, weatherproofing, and full servicing of heating systems. We have also performed an inspection of our insulation and exposed pipe work to prevent freezing.

Thanks
