Staying safe on campus during darker months

19 Nov 2025

As the days get shorter and the nights longer, it’s important we all take extra care when travelling to and from campus, working late, or navigating busy areas like Oxford Road. Here are some key safety tips and resources to help keep you safe and supported this season.

Travelling Safely in the Dark

Whether you're commuting by bus, train, car, or bicycle, visibility and awareness are key. Here are a few reminders:

  • Plan your route and check travel updates before setting off.
  • Wear reflective clothing or accessories if cycling or walking.
  • Travel with others where possible, especially early in the morning or late at night.

Download SafeZone

The SafeZone app is your direct link to Campus Support and Security. It allows you to:

  • Check in when working alone or arriving early/late.
  • Request help quickly in an emergency.
  • Report suspicious activity or concerns discreetly.

Make sure you and your team are familiar with how it works. You can download it and learn more at the SafeZone webpage.

Charity Collectors on Oxford Road

Oxford Road is a busy public space, and you may encounter charity workers asking for donations. While many are legitimate, please be vigilant:

  • Check for proper identification and licensing.
  • If you feel uncomfortable or suspect illegitimate activity, report it via SafeZone.
  • Do not feel pressured to donate. Your safety comes first.

If you have any concerns or suggestions around campus safety, please reach out to your line manager or Campus Support and Security. Let’s look out for each other and stay safe this season.
