Campus safety essentials for the new academic year
11 Sep 2025
As we head into the new academic year, it's important to remind yourself of essential health and safety tips around fire alarms, first aid, and reporting.

Fire alarms: Don’t wait, evacuate
If the fire alarm sounds outside of the weekly test, leave the building immediately using the nearest fire exit. Don’t stop to collect your belongings. Leave your work – your safety is the priority. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
First Aid: Know where to go
For minor illnesses or injuries, First Aid notices are displayed in all buildings. Follow the instructions to contact a trained first aider.
For serious incidents:
- Call Campus Support & Security on 0161 306 9966 (also on the back of your University ID card)
- Use the SafeZone App
- Or dial 999 for emergency services
Reporting issues
Help us keep campus safe and running smoothly by reporting any concerns:
- Accidents, incidents, or near-misses: All accidents, incidents, and near-misses should be reporting to prevent recurrence using the Accident/Incident Reporting Form
- Work-related ill health: Contact Occupational Health
- Building issues (e.g. faulty lights, loose paving): Report to the Estates Helpdesk
- Security concerns: Campus Support & Security is available 24/7
Remember: Reporting helps prevent future problems. You won’t be blamed for raising a concern.
Putting safety first
Let’s work together to maintain a safe, supportive, and responsive campus environment for everyone.
