Video: Transformed network to set teaching and learning innovation up for success
11 Sep 2025
The University of Manchester is undergoing significant investment in improving the organisation’s network to set up teaching and learning innovation for success.
A new video highlighting the ongoing work to upgrade the University’s network lists some of the ways colleagues and students will feel the benefits of the changes currently underway across campus and beyond.
“We see our network as the fourth utility because without a secure, reliable, future-proof network, we don’t have the foundations to support this amazing new technology that’s going to benefit the teaching and learning offering here at the University of Manchester,” says Network Architect, Paul Westhead.
The ongoing transformations have been spearheaded in partnership between the Strategic Change Office, IT Services and external partners, and aim to provide the structural foundations for new technologies that will transform the teaching and learning landscape.
Among the transformations benefitting teaching and learning happening now are upgraded WiFi access points (APs) supporting our WiFi-enabled campus and ensuring the same high-quality connectivity no matter where you work.
The University is also investing in more tools to bring network management and monitoring services in-house, upskilling IT staff and adopting smart systems that utilise AI functionalities to identify issues on the network before services are disrupted and reduce the number of tickets coming through to IT support, saving time and allowing everyone to get on with their work.
