The Data and AI Academy

Launched in December 2024, the Data and AI Academy is a 13-month programme developed in partnership with Multiverse, a leading provider of professional training and apprenticeships. This initiative is designed to equip University colleagues with essential skills in data analytics and artificial intelligence, addressing a growing demand within the education sector for better utilization of technology and data.

Dr. Gail Millin-Chalabi is a Project Manager for the Research Lifecycle Programme working on a range of university-wide initiatives such as the PURE Migration Project, she is also a NERC Co-I Researcher for Towards a UK Fire Danger Rating System Project and one of the first participants in the Data and AI Academy. Not only is her apprenticeship empowering her to leverage AI in her day-to-day work, but it also presented her with the opportunity to meet Prime Minister, Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street alongside four of her fellow Multiverse apprentices from across the UK as part of London Tech Week.

“The apprenticeship has been truly transformative, empowering me to integrate AI into my daily work and contribute meaningfully to the University’s digital evolution. Meeting Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at Downing Street was a proud and surreal moment, I was able to discuss with him, the value of apprenticeships in shaping future-ready professionals. This journey has not only deepened my technical capabilities but also opened the door to an exciting new role at the library, where I can continue to drive innovation and impact as Head of Digital Reach in the Directorate of AI and Ideas Adoption (AIIA).”

Advancing AI Transformation at the University

The Data and AI Academy is just one example of the University’s strategic investment in AI and digital skills development for staff. It forms a key element of the AI Transformation Programme, which is focused on harnessing the power of technology to meet evolving institutional and societal needs - bridging gaps in data skills, driving efficiencies, and cultivating a workforce that is better equipped to face the challenges of a rapidly digitizing world.

The recently launched AI Hub provides a gateway for staff to explore current opportunities to explore AI as well as useful resources and guidelines.
