Essential safety tips during warm weather

20 May 2025

As temperatures continue to remain high, it's important to be aware of a few simple safety steps to support one another.

Health and safety

Personal safety in hot weather

Whilst we enjoy the change in weather, we also need to be careful in the heat. Please remember to:

  • Stay hydrated: Remember to drink regularly throughout the day. A good way to do this is to bring a refillable water bottle onto campus.
  • Protect yourself from the sun: Wear and reapply suncream as necessary, as well as light clothing and a hat if you're spending time outside.
  • Take breaks: If you start to feel overheated or tired, go to a cooler space for a break.

Supporting students during exams

Many of our students are currently sitting exams or completing their final assessments. Warmer temperatures can affect both concentration and wellbeing, so please encourage students to:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat balanced meals.
  • Get adequate rest.

These small actions can make a big difference.

Lab and workshop safety

In these warmer temperatures, it's important to review safety procedures in our labs and workshops:

  • Check storage conditions: Some materials may become unstable or degrade in heat or direct sunlight. Ensure all items are stored according to safety guidelines.
  • Monitor ambient temperatures: Equipment and chemicals may behave differently in warmer conditions. Please check for items that need to be stored differently during this time.
  • Ventilation: Ensure your workspaces are properly ventilated to prevent overheating and maintain air quality.

Project supervision and material management

As many taught students will be completing their research projects this month, please can supervisors ensure that any lab materials are properly managed, with correct labellng, disposal, or transfer of ownership.
