How to manage Freedom of Information requests

07 May 2024

Please complete this training by Wednesday, 31 July

New training is available for all colleagues who regularly use a computer to ensure you know when you’ve received a Freedom of Information (FOI) request and how to proceed.

The training will equip you with the knowledge needed to handle FOI requests effectively. The short online course will take no more than 10 minutes to complete and contains essential information about FOI requests such as the legal basis for requests, how to direct an FOI request and further information about how the University processes FOI requests.

We request all colleagues who use a computer as part of their job to complete the training by Wednesday, 31 July.

How can I access the training?

Once you have completed all elements, you will be able to access your Blackboard certificate. Your training record will update within 72 hrs.

Why do we receive FOI requests?

We have legal obligations under the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2000 to respond to requests for information.

This legislation grants individuals the right to request information held by public authorities, including our University. When someone submits an FOI request, we are required to respond promptly and transparently.

Will I have to complete this training on an annual basis?

We encourage colleagues to complete this training every two years and we will share regular reminders on StaffNet.

New colleagues will be encouraged to complete it as part of their induction.
