Reporting process for participation in strike action

18 Sep 2023

A message from Adèle MacKinlay, Director of People and Organisational Development

Last week, we informed colleagues of a further 9 days of strike action that will commence as of tomorrow (Tuesday 19 September) by members of the University and College Union (UCU).

Reporting Strike Days

Whilst we understand that most of our colleagues will continue to work as normal during this period to ensure as little disruption to our student community as possible, we also respect every employee’s right to strike.

We would like to remind all employees that if they participate in strike action, they are expected to inform their line manager when asked and to report this by Wednesday 4 October via the online form:

Participation in Strike Action Form - September 2023

Our local executives (UMUCU) have been consulted about the reporting process for this period of industrial action and their feedback has been incorporated into the reporting process and online form.

A failure to report whether you have taken part in strike action (or Action Short of Strike) after being asked by your line manager will be treated as not responding and it will be assumed that you have taken part in the industrial action, leading to pay withholding.

Withholding of Pay for Strike Action and Strike Days

As with the University’s previous response to strike action, all colleagues who choose to participate in the upcoming Strike Days will have their pay withheld at 100% of 1/365th of their annual salary for each day of strike action that takes place.

For strike action taken between Monday 25 September – Friday 29 September pay will be withheld in November payroll.
