Summer 2023 graduation ceremonies get underway

11 Jul 2023

Summer graduation ceremonies have started for the Class of 2023

Summer graduation

On 11 July, we started welcoming our students and their friends, families and supporters for the start of our 2023 Summer graduation ceremonies. The ceremonies take place at Whitworth Hall from Tuesday, 11 July to Friday, 21 July 2023 and the full schedule of ceremonies is available on our Graduation programme website.

Graduation is a significant milestone in our final year students’ Manchester journey, and an opportunity to look back at all their hard work and achievements throughout their time with us.

We’re looking forward to welcoming the Class of 2023 onto campus to celebrate with their family and friends.

Get involved

You can watch a livestream of all the 2023 ceremonies on our website - the graduation schedule will show you what's coming up.

Don’t forget to follow along on social media as we will be sharing some of the ceremony highlights, photos, and special moments.

Marking and assessment boycott

We know graduation ceremonies hold immense significance for our students and our entire University community and that there will have been some concerns about the impact that the ongoing marking and assessment boycott (MAB) would have on our student’s ability to receive their final awards in time to join their ceremony.

Unfortunately, of more than 11,400 students due to graduate this summer, around 3% have been identified as having insufficient marks for an exam board to consider an award, which means that they will not have their final classified awards in time for their ceremony. Every student due to graduate was emailed last week to confirm the status of their award and those impacted by the MAB have been notified and will receive their results as soon as they become available.

We understand and appreciate the distress and frustration that these affected students may be feeling and felt that it was important to continue with our graduation ceremonies as scheduled, to avoid any further disruption to our student community. Any students that have been impacted by MAB, have been invited to attend and participate in full.

All students will also be provided with a letter that they can share with prospective employers or higher education institutions, to explain the MAB context and assure them of the quality and standards of our awards. They will receive this during their Graduation ceremony, or by contacting careers@manchester.ac.uk
