The University Language Centre is changing its name

15 Sep 2022

Read about its change to become the University Centre for Academic English.

From Monday, 19 September the University Language Centre is changing its name to the University Centre for Academic English (UCAE) and its new website will go live at the end of September.

UCAE will remain the home for the University’s summer Pre-sessionals, the intensive year-long English for Academic Purposes course, credit-based courses and the work it does on the University’s Foundation programmes. This year also sees the start of a significant increase in academic language and skills support for the University’s international student cohort.

The Centre has listened to its international students and knows that they want more guidance, input and practice throughout the year, not just with the challenge of entering the University. Its staff will be working with them, and colleagues, so that all 18,000+ international students can thrive and gain the skills and knowledge to make the most of their time with us.

UCAE will increasingly be basing its in-year work more specifically around the University’s nine Schools. It will be in contact with School staff with more information on that over the coming year and will also be suggesting ways you can help them reach those who want their input.

Accredited by both the British Council (the most internationally recognised quality assurance scheme for language teaching), and BALEAP (the sector’s professional body for those involved in teaching, scholarship and research into English for Academic Purposes), UCAE has been ranked the number one University Language Centre for three years running (EL Gazette University Rankings, 2022).

This recognition has provided the Centre with the external reputation and confidence needed to share its expertise in the world of English language teaching. In partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2023 UCAE will be launching a Trinity Teacher Training programme (Certificate for Practicing Teachers) and will share more information on this shortly.
