Professor Michael Luger – message from Professor Fiona Devine

31 Mar 2022

I write with great sadness to inform you of the death of our colleague Professor Michael Luger. Our thoughts are with his wife Angela and Michael’s family at this very sad time.

Professor Luger was Director of the Business School between 2007 and 2013 having joined us from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was a Professor of Public Policy, Business and Planning.

After Michael retired as Director of MBS, he was the Director of the School’s Centre for Infrastructure Development until 2015 and Emeritus Professor from 2016. From 2014, Michael held numerous Non-Executive Director roles, including in the Office of Rail and Road. Between 2014-2017, he was Chairman of the Board at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust.

Since January 2021, Michael was the Chairman of The Board at the Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust. This organisation is among the largest NHS provider groups in England with 20,000 employees. It includes four care organisations in Salford, Oldham, Rochdale and Bury.

The funeral will be in Scranton, Pennsylvania where Michael came from originally.  We understand Angela and the family want to arrange a memorial in the UK in due course. We will let you know more information when it is available of course.

I remember Mike as a hugely courteous colleague and I know there will be many others who will recall his other lovely qualities.

Regards Fiona
