Pay-as-you-go scheme for car parking

08 Nov 2021

The PAYG scheme will start on Tuesday, 4 January 2022

Booth Street car park

Following the September announcement that the switch over to the pay as you go scheme was delayed, we are now able to confirm that the launch of the scheme will take place from January 2022.

The systems and infrastructure will be installed over the next 5 weeks; however, charges for permit holders will not be implemented until we return from the Christmas closure (on Tuesday, 4 January 2022).

If you park at Booth Street West, Cecil Street, Charles Street or Dilworth Street car parks, and your permit is currently active (allowing you to enter/exit) you will automatically be switched over to the new system.

If you park at Aquatics, CTF/Incubator, Dover Street, or North Campus, you will need to visit the office to be set up on the new system, however, you will only need to do so when we display signage at the car parks instructing you to do so.

If you have any issues with access please take a ticket or use the intercom, and call into the office (G.002 Beyer Building) between 8.30am – 12.30pm or 1.30pm – 3pm, Monday to Friday.

Do I need to book an appointment when I am instructed to visit?

No. We are now operating a drop in system between 8.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 3pm Monday to Friday. We are closed between 12.30pm - 1.30pm.

How will I be able to top up?

Top up can be made by cash or card at the pay machines within the car parks, or by card payment in the Permit Office. We cannot accept cash in the office, and we do not take payments over the phone or online.

How do I top up?

Instructions will be displayed at the pay machines and topping up is quite simple. You will be able to add credit in multiples of £5.00 as follows:

  1. Visit the pay machine and put your University ID/Permit card against the contactless symbol. The machine will show 3 options.
  2. Press ‘Recharge’. This will give you the option to add £5.00 or press ‘Reload Higher’ to top up in £5.00 increments.
  3. Insert payment.

If you have any difficulties, we have Attendants at most car parks and they can help if needed.

If you want to top up in the Permit Office, please just call in during our opening hours.

Where can I top up?

Alongside topping up in the Permit Office, there will be pay machines in the car parks at Booth Street West, Charles Street, Dover Street and on the 7th Floor of the Aquatics car park.

How will I know how much money I have?

When you scan your card to enter the car park, the display will show your remaining credit. When you scan your card to exit, the display will again show your remaining credit (with the deduction for the hours you have parked automatically taken off).

What happens if I run out of credit?

You won’t be able to exit the car park, so please keep an eye on your balance and top up before it completely runs out.

How long is credit valid for?

For most permit holders, credit will be valid for one year. For anyone on fixed term contracts or associates on short term contracts/leases, there will be an expiry date added to the permit in line with the end date.

Will I be able to get a refund if I leave or give up my permit?

Yes, provided it is within the one year period of topping up.
