Intermittent issues accessing online services

15 Jan 2021

Global issue causing intermittent access problems

Update 9 (12 noon, Wednesday 20 January)

A permanent resolution for the issue with Financials and CRM has been implemented, and users of the systems have been emailed with information.

A small number of colleagues have received certificate issues when attempting to connect to GlobalProtect on their own computers. Upgrading to the latest version of the GlobalProtect Virtual Private Network should fix this issue:

We continue to investigate other certificate related issues, however If you have any other access issues, please contact the IT Support Centre:

Update 8 (4.25pm, Tuesday 19 January)

We're are implementing a permanent resolution for the Finance and CRM services this evening. Users of those systems will receive an email with more information, and we'll issue the next update here by 12 noon on Wednesday 20 January.

Update 7 (1pm, Tuesday 19 January)

We're currently testing a permanent resolution for the Finance and CRM services. We'll issue the next update by 4.30pm.

Update 6 (9.45am, Tuesday 19 January)

While we continue to replace certificates on affected services, a workaround for the issue affecting Finance and CRM has been sent to users experiencing the issue this morning, allowing users of managed University computers to use the Finance and CRM systems.

In the meantime, we will continue to work on a permanent resolution for all affected services.

We'll issue the next update by 1pm.

Update 5 (3.25pm and again at 5pm, Monday 18 January)

Work continues as a matter of urgency as we work to restore full access to affected services including Oracle Financials and CRM. We will work into the evening to try and resolve the issues.

Next update 10am on Tuesday 19 January.

Update 4 (2pm, Monday 18 January)

We are continuing to work on the problems caused by the certificate issue, to ensure affected services are restored to normal. We continue to treat Oracle Financials and CRM as the top priority, and we're working alongside colleagues in HR and Finance.

Next update at around 4pm.

Update 3 (11.45am, Monday 18 January)

We continue to work on fixing the issues with the certificates, and many services are now working as expected, however our main priority continues to be ensuring Oracle Financials is working correctly for everyone.

We'll issue a further update at around 2pm.

Update 2 (3.10pm, Friday 15 January)

Due to the number of services affected by the digital certificate issue, work is continuing to fix them all.

If you continue to have certificate error issues, we suggest trying an alternative web browser.

We’ll issue the next update around 12 noon on Monday 18 January.

Update 1 (12.55pm, Friday 15 January)

Following this morning's global issue that affected digital certificates, we have been working to restore our services.

Currently, there should be no more problems accessing our eLearning services such as Blackboard, or other systems which use the Central Authentication Service or Shibboleth for logging in. However, there are certain others which require additional work (such as Oracle Financials).

In the meantime, the workaround of using an alternative web browser should still work for those people who are experiencing intermittent issues.

We’ll issue the next update before 3pm today.

Original message (10.36am, Friday 15 January)

There's a global issue affecting a certificate issuing authority, causing intermittent access issues to web based services around the world, which includes some of our services.

Some people are finding that using an alternative web browser is a suitable temporary workaround to the problem, although this is not guaranteed. We're monitoring the situation and will issue a further update by 1pm today.
