The University is taking part in the Great Manchester Run with its own purple wave of 1,000 staff and students.

Taking part in the event will see us raise charity funds – and our staff and students’ physical and mental well being.

The Great Manchester Run, Europe's leading 10 kilometre running event, broadcast live on BBC, will be held on Sunday, 22 May 2016.

Since 2003 more than a quarter of a million people have taken part; the 2016 event will see the 300,000th runner across the finish line.

The University’s Sport team has negotiated 1,000 places for our runners, with the price to be confirmed but significantly discounted from the usual £38, and is working to choose three charities that will best sum up people’s fundraising preferences.

It will also provide support for those who sign up – with information on how to train for the event, advice on nutrition and encouragement – as well as purple running vests to wear on the day to maximise impact and the sense of the University community.

The University’s Sport Participation Manager, James Marenghi, said: “This is a great opportunity to create a community, from people who are new to running to top athletes.

“It will get people out and about, taking part in fantastic exercise, with all the benefits that has for our physical and mental health and wellbeing.

“On top of that knowing we are making a real difference through the buzz of raising huge amounts of money for charity together. It’s going to be a great day.”
