Back in 2022, our University was the first to move from taking a zero-tolerance stance on student drug use, to one of harm reduction. Shifting the focus on providing students with knowledge and support, to make informed choices.

With the ever-changing recreational drug landscape and concern about the increasing presence of synthetic opioids which are often incredibly powerful and dangerous; in collaboration with our ResLife and our Campus Support and Security Teams, the Division of Campus Life has been working with local support organisation, Eclypse – Manchester to deliver training on the administration of Naloxone, an antidote for opioid overdose.

The training is designed to enhance the emergency first response by our brilliant ResLife and Campus Support and Security colleagues, who are often first on scene.

The training covers emerging local ‘trends’ and risks, new research on how drugs are circulated across the region, signs and symptoms of overdose and, emergency interventions (including administration of Naloxone nasal spray) and referral pathways to further support.

Well done to all colleagues that have engaged with this important training. It will greatly bolster our University-wide Harm Reduction approach and continue to support our students.
