May exam and assessment period: what colleagues need to know

12 May 2025

Find out how to support students and access key staff resources during the exam and assessment period, including wellbeing services, study spaces, and academic guidance.

Students studying

The May-June exam window is now open, marking a busy time for students as they complete a variety of assessments. While exams remain an important component, they sit alongside other forms of assessment such as coursework, presentations and practical work — all part of our wider commitment to inclusive and continuous learning.

Many teams across our University are involved in making this happen throughout the year — from designing and delivering assessments to offering advice, space and support. Together, we’re helping to ensure students can engage confidently and meaningfully with their assessments.

Support for students

Colleagues can play a valuable role in signposting students to tools and spaces that support their progress and wellbeing:

  • Exam support hub: Includes guidance on timetables, revision techniques, policies and more.
  • Library support: The Main Library is open until 2am daily. Encourage students to visit the Library’s assessment support page for the latest updates.
  • Alternative study spots: From the John Rylands Library to quiet spaces across campus and the city, there are plenty of options beyond the busiest buildings. Sign post students to the best alternative study spots around the city.
  • We’re offering lots of free breakfasts, snacks and drinks to keep students going throughout the exam and assessment period, as well as free Wednesday breakfasts over at the Alan Gilbert Learning Commons.
  • Remind students that they can drop into their nearest Student Support Hub for practical advice, wellbeing support, or help connecting with services – no appointment needed.

Support for colleagues

We also recognise the time and care staff invest in supporting students and each other during this period. Whether you’resupporting students, offering guidance or coordinating activity behind the scenes, your work never goes unnoticed.
