The Effect of Training and Brain Stimulation on Visual Search Performance

We are looking for individuals to take part in a study investigating whether we can enhance cognitive performance by applying a weak current on your scalp, using a method called transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). This experiment has three components: an MRI scan (about 30 min), two EEG recording sessions (each lasting about 2 hours), and five training sessions (each lasting about 2 hours and spread across five days) during which tDCS will be used for some participants. So, your total time commitment will be 15 hours across a period of about 10 days. We realise that this is a considerable commitment therefore you will be reimbursed for your time.

 

During the study you can follow your normal caffeine and/or nicotine routine but excessive 

alcohol intake the night before the study is discouraged. Please be sure you meet all of the inclusion criteria and none of the exclusion criteria. 

 

Inclusion Criteria: 

•Able to provide informed consent.

•Aged 18 years or over

•Normal vision or vision corrected-to-normal via glasses. 

•Fluent English-speaker.

•Fully vaccinated against COVID (at least 2 doses)

 

Exclusion Criteria: 

•Any history of neurological disorders

•Any history of mood disorders

•Any metal implants in any part of the body

•Conditions causing extreme skin sensitivity (e.g., eczema), particularly on the scalp

•Currently using any psychoactive medication including antidepressants 

 

When you express your interest, we will send you an information package that contains a  complete list of conditions and prescription medications that will prevent you from participating.

 

What is tDCS stimulation like? tDCS stimulation is generated via two electrodes in contact with your scalp, these electrodes will be held in place using a headband. The electrodes will be wet, and they might feel a bit cold at first. We will be applying a weak electrical current that should be barely perceptible, if it all.
