Comparative Evaluation of the Accuracy of Spatial and Non-Spatial Digit Triplet Tests

We are inviting you to take part in a study - “Comparative Evaluation of the Accuracy of Spatial and Non-Spatial Digit Triplet Tests” The purpose of this research is to improve our understanding of how people recognize speech in background noise. While some people perform better than others in noisy environments, it is not fully understood whether this is mainly influenced by listening ability or by factors such as attention. A better understanding of these factors may help improve hearing assessment methods in the future.
To investigate this, participants will complete a listening task in which they hear groups of three spoken numbers presented with background noise. The level of difficulty will vary throughout the test to measure how well speech can be recognized in noisy environments. You will be given clear instructions before the experiment begins.
The Digit Triplet Test means that you will hear a set of three numbers (for example, “3-7-4”) presented with background noise, and you will need to enter what you hear. This test is used to measure how well you can understand speech in noisy environments.
You will be asked to sit at a laptop and complete the experiment using headphones and the provided software.
Who can take part?
- Age 18-30
- Normal hearing
Note:
As you are reading this document it is assumed that your vision, either with or without glasses, is suitable for the study. You need to be able to read words presented on a computer screen easily. The words are quite large and provided you are reading this document without needing to enlarge the font, there should be no reason that your eyesight would prevent you from being included in the study.

The research will be completed in one single session that is estimated to take 40 minutes
The research will be conducted on the ground floor, B block of Ellen Wilkinson Building, University of Manchester in room BG.18.
