Participants wanted for an EEG-neurofeedback study of episodic memory

Description

Hi, my name is Lydia and I am an MSci Cognitive Neuroscience and Psychology student at The University of Manchester. I am looking for participants to take part in a study investigating the effect of EEG-neurofeedback on memory.

Participation would involve attending an in-person session at the EEG Lab in Dover Street Building (University of Manchester Main Campus). We will ask you to ensure that you have clean, dry hair and a clean face (no make-up) when you come for the EEG session. To record the EEG, we will apply a stretchy electrode cap that contains a number of electrodes and we will insert gel to allow the electrodes to make contact with your scalp. At the end of the session, you will be able to wash the gel out of your hair and dry your hair in the lab.

Prior to the EEG recording, we will ask you to complete some questionnaires and memory tasks. We will then set up the EEG cap and ask you to complete EEG-based neurofeedback training. Neurofeedback involves watching an animation on a computer screen whose movements are determined by a feature of your brain activity and attempting to learn to control the animation by controlling your brain activity. You will be randomly assigned to either the ‘true’ neurofeedback group or the ‘control’ group, and the animation will only be linked to your brain activity if you are in the ‘true’ neurofeedback group. Both you and the researcher will be ‘blinded’ to which condition you are in. After neurofeedback training, we will ask you to perform another memory task whilst we record your brain activity with EEG. You will then be asked to complete some brief post-session questionnaires, and you can wash and dry your hair before leaving the lab.

The session will last up to 2.5 hours, and you will be compensated financially for your time.

You must meet the following criteria to participate:

  • Aged 18-35.
  • Right-handed.
  • Normal or corrected to normal vision.
  • No history of psychiatric or neurological disorders.
  • Not currently taking any psychoactive medications (e.g., antidepressants).
  • Do not have particularly sensitive skin or skin allergies.
