How does our skin barrier change with age and what is the impact of ethnicity and UVR exposure?

Description

"HEALTHY VOLUNTEERS OF EURASIAN, SOUTH ASIAN, FAR EAST ASIAN AND AFRICAN BACKGROUND AGED 18-30 OR 65+ are required for a research study to investigate the decline of human skin barrier function with ageing, and the impact of ethnicity and UVR exposure. Participation requires two visits to Salford Royal Hospital on consecutive days. The study involves skin exposure to low-dose UVR, non-invasive skin assessments and the collection of 4 small skin samples - 2 from the upper buttock, and 2 from the outer forearm (each with diameter 5mm).

 

The study is not suitable for people who have/are:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Sunbed users
  • History of a photosensitivity disorder
  • Bleeding disorders or use medications which affect blood coagulation
  • History of skin cancer
  • Moderate to severe inflammatory skin condition (e.g. eczema, psoriasis)
  • Known bloodborne virus infection (e.g. HIV, Hepatitis B/C)
  • Receive hormone replacement therapy (HRT)
  • Unable to understand the written information or adequately communicate in English
