A video about the AMBS Career Flex Pilot
25 Mar 2026
Find out what it's like to use the AMBS Career Flex Pilot scheme.
One of great initiatives from last year’s colleague engagement survey was the introduction of the Career Flex Pilot scheme which supports colleagues wanting to try a different role at the same grade. For hiring managers, it’s a quick way of looking for existing talent within the School using a simplified application process.
In this video, we hear from Julian Holt, who successfully applied for a 12-month secondment in the Marketing, Communications and Recruitment team. The video also features Neil Horne, who used the Career Flex Pilot to recruit Julian.
Video transcript
Hi, I'm Julian. I'm an MBA Content Assistant at AMBS.
Describe your experience of using the Career Flex Pilot
Yeah, I had a really good experience with it. It was my first time using it - well, because it is fairly new. I saw it advertised and it was for a job that exactly fitted the kind of role I wanted to go in for. And when I clicked on the link, yeah, very easy to follow and they encourage transparency with managers about your career aspirations. So, I talked with my team, and my manager was very transparent about it. They were very supportive and they may have even ‘bigged’ me up a little bit and then yeah did the interview and it was just great yeah to see ‘oh here is an opportunity to get some professional experience in skills that I already have and to elevate them’. So yeah very positive experience.
How long did it take?
So from the advertisement going out to being due, I think it was about three days, which was enough time to send in a CV and write 500 words or something like that to be like, ‘why do I want this job?’ So yeah, quite a quick turnaround that one.
Would you use it again to apply for a role?
Yes, I would use it again. Had a very positive experience. I mean, I used it once and I got the job so that was great! And if you want to look for opportunities, you can look in the e-bulletin and it will be there.
Hi, I'm Neil Horne and I'm the Senior Marketing Officer for our MBA and MSc Financial Management programmes.
What is the Career Flex Pilot?
The career flex pilot is a way for people in AMBS to be able to look to move into different roles at the same level. From their perspective, it means that they could maybe pick up on skills they already have or look into an area they want to work in - or even build upon the sort of knowledge that they've built up before and use that in a different way.
Would you use it again as a hiring manager?
I'd definitely use the Career Flex pilot again. I think it was really handy to be able to send out information to people already in the business school and people with existing knowledge of how we do things here and understanding like what the role might be in a bit more of a clear way than if you went externally - especially as I said for some of the shorter term roles that we might have on offer because it means that someone gets that opportunity to try something new and learn something different. And so it has benefits from both from our side and from the side of the person who's applying for the role.
