Welcoming New Starters

An effective welcome and formal induction to an organisation is critical both to ensure that the new starter is able to become a competent member of staff, but also to support them in engaging with their new role, colleagues and the University itself. Putting together a sufficient, all round induction process is not difficult, but can be overlooked. Induction isn’t just about the first few days, it is an ongoing process that takes several months. This guidance will help you prepare for a new starter in your team and think about how to make this as effective as possible.

All new members of staff will receive a New Staff Induction & Information Booklet which is designed to provide essential basic information to help employees in their first few weeks of employment. The New Staff Induction Checklist sets out the minimum requirements that must be covered, including various mandatory training sessions which must be completed. This can be supplemented with local requirements. It also includes an Induction Training and Development Plan to help identify initial training needs within the role. The assessment notes and scores from the interview may provide a helpful source to identify development needs. The Induction Health & Safety Checklist must also be completed.

Are you bringing a new member of staff onboard while the campus is partially closed?  Supporting them while they (or you) are remote working may require a little extra thought and planning, to help them get set up quickly and make them feel part of the University.  We have produced a How to guide on this, but please reach out to your HR Services team for any additional support you require.
