Transgender Day of Visibility

25 Mar 2024

Transgender Day of Visibility is on Sunday, 31 March

Transgender Day of Visibility is on Sunday, 31 March

At our University, we take a holistic approach that celebrates individuals and their many identities so that we are a truly inclusive organisation.

We aim to create an inclusive, diverse and accessible environment where it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure all members of our University community are treated with fairness, dignity, respect and have a sense of belonging.

Banji Adewumi (she/her), Director of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion said:  'Transgender Day of Visibility is an annual event in the University calendar that is dedicated to celebrate Trans People and to raising awareness of the discrimination they face.

In line with our values, our EDI strategy and our People and OD Strategy, discrimination, victimisation or any form of hatred towards any member of our community is unlawful and is not tolerated. We are committed to ensuring everyone within our community has a sense of belonging at The University of Manchester.

We all have a role to play as we build an inclusive environment and culture at Manchester where everyone has a sense of belonging. You can do this by showing or sharing your Pronouns and also by ensuring that you and other members of your team have completed their essential Equality and Diversity training.

For further information and possibly to arrange training for your team, please email equalityanddiversity@manchester.ac.uk and my colleague David will respond.'

Events

Wednesday, 27 March

10am – Simon Building, Room 3.44A

ALLOUT Allies Training for FBMH Colleagues

This short session covers what it means to be an ally, why we have allies and how you can maximise your time as an ally.

You’ll also have the chance to meet and network with other allies and hear accounts from a member of the ALLOUT group and the experiences of an ally.

Resources

We have a number of resources available to support our community of trans people including:

EDI Blog

Dr Sabine Sharp has written a piece for the EDI Blog, outlining a brief history of Trans Activism in the UK.

ALLOUT

ALLOUT is a fully inclusive staff network that welcomes all lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and non-binary staff as well as anyone who may have an interest or wish to support colleagues, friends and relatives.

ALLOUT has a number of sub groups which bring together intersections of the LGBT+ community (including LGBT+ people of faith and non-binary colleagues). They also have a trans staff only Teams space – please contact equalityanddiversity@manchester.ac.uk for more info.

ALLOUT allies

TDOV is also an opportunity to remind us of the ways that allies can support trans colleagues and students.

Allies are defined as individuals who do not identify as LGBT and who believe that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people should experience full equality in the workplace.
