Talk Money Week

06 Nov 2023

Improve your financial wellbeing

Monday, 6 November marks the start of Talk Money Week.

Talk Money Week was launched to address the need for improved financial education and awareness.

There has been an increase in conversations around money because of the cost-of-living crisis related news, however people still find it hard to talk about money. Talk Money Week creates opportunity to encourage people to open-up about finances.

The theme for Talk Money Week this year set by the Money and Pensions Service is ‘Do One Thing’. They are encouraging everyone to Do One Thing that could help improve your financial wellbeing, and to tell someone about it to help inspire them to do the same.

That one thing does not have to be huge, it can be simple, such as: paying your pension some attention, checking your subscriptions costs (are you paying for subscriptions you do not use anymore or did not even know you have?), starting a conversation with your partner about that money concern that has been lurking in the back of your mind, chat to your child about ‘what is a budget’, start an emergency savings fund (even if it starts with just £5), check last week’s outgoings, ask yourself about a purchase you have been thinking of ‘is it a want or a need’ or research a free or low cost activity to do in the next few weeks.

Building on your ‘One Thing’: there are many helpful tools and calculators available to help you get started with thinking about budgeting and a budget planner, benefits calculator, baby money timeline, bill prioritiser, pension calculator, mortgage affordability calculator and many more.

Get talking

Research shows that people who talk about money:

  • Make better and less risky financial decisions;
  • have stronger personal relationships;
  • help their children form good money habits for life;
  • feel less stressed or anxious and more in control.

Talking about money is not easy but talking to a trusted person or a support service really does start the ball rolling for getting help, support and getting a plan together to help you move forward. Money Helper provides helpful tips and advice on how to talk about money.
