Four individual and team submissions from across the Faculty of Humanities have been recognised in the University’s 2026 Teaching Excellence Awards. The annual awards celebrate significant and sustained excellence in teaching and learning, highlighting practices that make a real difference to students.
Congratulations to:
Caroline Hoyle – Award for Educational Leadership
Caroline, Senior Lecturer in Law in SoSS, received the award in recognition of her sustained and strategic leadership as Senior Academic Advisor for the School between 2021 and 2025. She has developed a new blended academic advising model that grew from a pilot into an approach embedded across the School, supporting a team of 13 specialist advisors and helping to create a more consistent, personalised and inclusive experience for students.
Pietro Paolo Frigenti – Highly commended for Inclusive Education and Student Voice
A Senior Lecturer in Marketing in AMBS, Pietro was recognised for his student-centred work responding to issues including group work, belonging, loneliness, equality, diversity and inclusion, and preparation for employment. Over the last three years he has secured funding for three projects – a co-created study, use of an immersive virtual-reality platform simulating workplace scenarios, and a student-led podcast.
Manchester Institute of Education (MIE) Undergraduate Education Research Conference team – Highly commended for Assessment and Feedback and Student Voice
The MIE Undergraduate Education Research Conference team, led by Senior Lecturer Sara Jackson in SEED, along with Lecturer Karen Healey and ESRC Research Fellow Choen Yin Chan, have developed the conference into a curriculum-embedded model of authentic assessment and student-staff partnership, helping students to build confidence, develop their identity as researchers and strengthen their sense of belonging.
Hannah Wilkinson – Commended for Assessment and Feedback
Hannah, a Lecturer in Education Psychology in MIE in SEED, was recognised for a series of carefully planned and evaluated approaches to enhancing students’ experiences of assessment and feedback. Her work included an assignment checklist and peer-marking activities to build students’ confidence and understanding of assessment requirements, alongside projects encouraging them to engage actively with feedback and apply lessons to future assessments.
The awards will be presented at a celebration in Whitworth Hall on Tuesday 3 November.
