Desks and computers
Academic staff in Rutherford are allocated a specific desks within shared offices. There are two larger shared offices for research fellows and postgraduate researchers, equipped with hotdesks. Some of these desks are bookable in advance whilst others are first-come, first-served.
All work stations are equipped with a monitor and laptop connection.
Printers are located next to the Head of Department's office on the ground floor and in the PGR room on the second floor. They are accessed through the University's central printing system. Information about Printing and Copying (including how to report errors).
Kitchens and breakout areas
Kitchenettes with facilities for making hot drinks are located on each of the three floors, clearly marked as 'tea point'. Each of these locations contains a cold/boiling water tap and a fridge.
The Common Room on the second floor has a kitchen area with fridge, microwave and crockery available for staff to prepare food, as well as chairs and tables. Staff must clean up after themselves, including washing up all crockery.
There is a small Wellbeing Room on the second floor, with dimmable lighting and relaxed seating for up to two people.
There are also staff break-out spaces on the second floor mezzanine, at the end of each corridor on the first and second floors and in the Rutherford Room on the ground floor.

Rutherford Building is the home to our Geography department, who moved there from the Arthur Lewis Building in July 2026. The Geography labs remain in the Arthur Lewis Building.

Lockers
There are code operated lockers on the second floor of the Rutherford Building for the use of Postgraduate Researcher students. To be allocated a locker please email SEEDestates@manchester.ac.uk.
Post
Post for Rutherford building based employees should initially be sent to Arthur Lewis Building.
Showers
A large disability-accessible shower/wet room is available on the second floor of the Rutherford Building. this is equipped with a seat and handrails.
Toilets
Gender neutral toilets, which contain a sink inside the cubicle, are located on each floor. Each floor also has a larger disabled toilet.
Wireless access
Wireless access and roam points are available throughout the majority of the building. Staff, students or visitors gain access to the internet via a University of Manchester username and password.
