Academic advising resources

Academic advising is a vital part of the student experience. In the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures, we realise the importance that it has in student success, and would like to support our advisors in carrying out this crucial role. Please see below for some resources, information and guidance which we believe will help you carry out your role as an advisor.

Academic advising toolkit A central Teaching and Learning Support Office resource aimed at Advisors across the University. Features the Academic Advising policy, model and general guidance
Careers and employability information for Humanities staff Advice, information and resources on careers and employability for staff in Humanities
Reference requests Guidance on how to deal with reference requests from students
Keeping mental health in mind An e-learning package to give non-specialist University staff the skills, knowledge and confidence to offer the first line of support to students who may have mental health issues
Academic Advisor Calendar Meeting points and typical topics that a student may raise with you at specific points in the academic year

SALC student support and guidance, including mitigating circumstances advice The Student facing website for our own Student Support and Guidance Office. The factsheet on Mitigating Circumstances is particularly useful
Disability advisory and support service (DASS) The University website for DASS. Helpful for students who are in need of disability support
University counselling service The University website for the Counselling Service. Useful to direct students to in urgent need of counselling  support, or for guidance on wellbeing and self-help resources 
University student support The University website for our central Student Services, who can support on financial queries, immigration advice, registration queries etc
My learning essentials The University Library's award-winning skills programme. My Learning Essentials has a range of student resources, workshops, and advice on areas such as avoiding plagiarism
Avoiding plagiarism guidance Taken from My Learning Essentials, an online e-learning package on avoiding plagiarism
Report and support page Student advice on bullying, harassment, sexual harassment and discrimination
Students' Union advice centre The University of Manchester Students' Union website for their advice service, which offers independent and impartial advice on areas such as housing, finance, and academic issues
