University Social Responsibility Agenda

The third goal of the Manchester 2020 strategic plan focuses on social responsibility.

SALC Social Responsibility Agenda

The constituent parts of the new School have engaged with issues of social responsibility long before this became one of the University’s core goals. Our continuing aim is to use the research and teaching that we undertake to give a broader benefit to society through providing guidance for policy-making and training our students to understand how to address the major challenges facing society.

We seek to further maximise the impact of our research on cultural, social and economic development and we aspire to develop our UG and PGT (and where appropriate our PGR) programmes to deliver attributes of ‘The Purposes of a Manchester Education’ to challenge students to confront personal values and make ethical judgements and to prepare graduates for citizenship and leadership in diverse global environments. In addition, we will continue to develop and deepen our alumni engagement as a professional, intellectual, and financial resource, and in particular we aim to link our current students more effectively with our alumni.

We will continue to promote the understanding and application of cultural practice as a tool for individual and community development and we aim to work with the government and other agencies to support social, economic and cultural development of Greater Manchester. We will also aim to develop and implement an action plan for the recruitment and admissions of under-represented students and seek to further diversity and equality in staff appointments and promotions.

Our main goals

  1. To develop strong partnership working (teaching, research, placements, training, co-programming) with the cultural sector in Manchester and the North West, to underpin distinctive practices of Knowledge Exchange and Business Engagement
  2. To enhance the employability and professionalism of our students at all levels via an expanded programme of Work Placements (UG, PGT, PGR) and volunteering opportunities
  3. To work with Faculty on the dissemination and delivery of the University’s Social Responsibility agenda in teaching, outreach activities and partnership projects; to bring to a successful conclusion the Arts Access Fair to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Martin Harris Centre (October 2013)
  4. To develop a portfolio of Collaborative Partnerships (validation, articulation, 2+2 &c) with HE institutions in the UK and internationally, to meet our goals for increased student diversity, internationalisation, innovative teaching and learning, and diversification of income generation
  5. To deliver sector-specific CPD and training to clients in the fields of (a) humanitarianism (b) cultural practice and (c) languages, translation and interpreting (via HCRI, ICP, Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies, ULC)
  6. To deliver an expanded programme of public events and outreach activities, based on the research/practice expertise and interests of the School, via the Martin Harris Centre, the Centre for New Writing, the Manchester Histories Festival, the Multi-Lingual Manchester Initiative, and the Rylands Research Institute
  7. To contribute directly to the development and delivery of the UoM Heritage Strategy, based on our substantial expertise in heritage management and interpretation (Museology and Archaeology)
  8. To develop an action plan for Widening Participation; and review appointments and promotions with respect to diversity and equality.
