Maggie Gale appointed Head of the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures

Professor Maggie B Gale will become the next Vice-Dean and Head of the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures (SALC) for a two-year term with effect from 1 August 2026.
Maggie has made an outstanding contribution to the School and Faculty, and brings significant leadership experience, academic distinction as Professor of Drama, and a strong commitment to our University strategy, Manchester 2035.
She has been an exceptional Vice-Dean for Research since August 2022, and has made a considerable impact across the Faculty during this time.
Commenting on her appointment, Maggie said: “I am delighted to have been offered this role and look forward to working closely with all colleagues in SALC in the coming months.
“Manchester 2035 offers us some great opportunities to consolidate our strengths and contribute to shaping the continuing success of Arts, Languages and Cultures at the University in the next few years.”
Professor Fiona Devine, Vice-President and Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, said: “I congratulate Maggie on her appointment, and I am confident she will lead the School with clarity, ambition and collegiality. The role of Vice-Dean for Research will be filled internally. An invitation for applications for this position will be shared very soon, with a view to making an appointment for 1 August 2026.
