Extension of Professor Thomas Schmidt’s term as Head of SALC
17 Oct 2025
Thomas will continue as Head of SALC until July 2028.
Professor Thomas Schmidt’s term as the Head of SALC has been extended for an additional two years, until July 2028.
Thomas has almost ten years’ experience at the University. He first joined the Faculty in 2012 as Professor of Music, later leading the Division of Art History, Drama and Music, before leaving in 2017 for the University of Huddersfield to take up the position of Dean of Music, Humanities and Media. He returned to Manchester in his current role in 2021.
This extension will help ensure stability through a period of change across the sector, as our taught programmes portfolio continues to be reviewed and enhanced, the Faculty pursue new opportunities, and in preparation for REF 2029.
Thomas said: “I was delighted to return to Manchester as Head of SALC four years ago, and I have relished every moment leading such a fantastic School. I am grateful for the confidence placed in me by the University leadership to continue in this role, and I look forward to taking SALC through the first stages of implementing our Manchester 2035 strategy.”
