Creative Manchester presents the academic conference, Comics Up Close, on Tuesday 21 February 2023, at the Manchester Museum

Creative Manchester presents Comics Up Close, in partnership with the Lakes International Comic Art Festival and Sheffield Hallam University.
The interdiscplinary conference will feature new perspectives, research, and thinking from industry experts.
Taking place on 21 February 2023, from 10am-5pm, this event forms part of the global celebration of UNESCO International Mother Language Day, and will be held at Manchester Museum following its £15million transformation.
Speakers include academics from across The University of Manchester, including:
- Professor Andrew Miles, Professor of Sociology (SoSS), who will lead a presentation exploring the research objectives and social outcomes of four projects across Europe, using comics to deliver positive social outcomes. The projects were coordinated by Comic Art Europe in France, Catalonia, Belgium and the UK
- Dr Gemma Sou, Lecturer in Environment and Disasters (HCRI), whose work draws on postcolonial discourse to examine the everyday geographies and politics of climate change and disasters. She has worked with illustrators to create two comics based on her research: After Maria: Everyday Recovery from Disaster; and Everyday Stories of Climate Change
- Dr James Scorer, Senior Lecturer in Latin American Cultural Studies, who has worked extensively on Comics and (Anti)Racism in Latin America
