Katherine Clements

Katherine Clements, a graduate of Manchester University, has received a Fulbright Scholar Award to enable her to carry out research at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, on one of the most well-regarded and impactful scholarship programmes in the world.

Katherine graduated from Manchester University with an honours degree in Ancient History and Archaeology and is now a successful novelist, specialising in historical fiction. She is a Royal Literary Fund Fellow and has spent the last year working to improve academic writing skills in the Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health at Manchester University. As a Fulbright participant, she has been selected to research the history of colonial New Orleans, upon which a trilogy of new novels will be based.

As part of the Fulbright Visiting Scholar programme, the Scholar Awards provide the only scholarships available to academics and other professionals for lecturing and/or research in any discipline at any accredited US university. The Awards form part of the US-UK Fulbright Commission’s work to promote leadership, learning and empathy between nations through educational exchange.

Commenting on receiving the Award, Katherine said: "I’m utterly thrilled to receive a Fulbright Scholar Award, and extremely honoured to be flying the flag for the UK creative writing community. During my year in New Orleans, I plan to immerse myself in the history and culture of Louisiana – research that will inform my fiction for years to come.

"The roots of New Orleans’ unique culture, and many of its ongoing conflicts, can be traced back to its earliest days: I hope this opportunity will help me find a fresh take on this important story."
