Induction
SEED staff induction
Please visit People Directorate's new staff page, which details some of the basics you need to help you settle in, including first day essentials, induction guides, probation periods and mandatory training requirements.
Explore our SEED StaffNet pages to learn more about the School.
Buildings and access
To gain access to our buildings: Arthur Lewis, Ellen Wilkinson and Humanities Bridgeford Street, firstly collect your staff card, then email Access Control accesscontrol@manchester.ac.uk with your Staff ID number and the buildings you require access to.
Disabled staff support
Disabled staff support is available via Access to Work, a government scheme administered by the Department of Work and Pensions. Funding can be provided for equipment, travel and support worker costs.
Access to Work will usually fully fund equipment for new starters if an application is made within 6 weeks of your start date.
Further information can be found on our Access to Work webpage.
Health & Safety
Health and safety induction checklist
Your line manager should provide you with a health and safety induction checklist that should be completed within your first two weeks of starting your role. The checklist will be slightly different depending on whether you are academic staff or professional services staff.
SEED Health and Safety Induction
All new starters in SEED, whether they have come from outside of the University or have internally transferred, must complete a School level health and safety induction. These are run as required, and invitations are sent out after your start date. If you feel you have missed an induction or have never been invited to one, please email SEEDestates@manchester.ac.uk.
This local training complements the mandatory essential training for all staff:
Fire Marshal Training
SEED also requires new starters to complete the fire marshal training:
Display Screen Equipment Assessment
It is a requirement that all staff complete a DSE Assessment. If you spend time working from home in your role, you should complete one for both your home set up and your office set up.
Information Security & Data Protection online training
All academic and PSS staff who work with students or research participants are expected to undertake Information Governance Training Courses.
New Academics Programme
For information relating to the Humanities New Academics Programme (HNAP), please refer to the Faculty Intranet.
Completion of HNAP is a requirement for all new academic staff to pass "academic probation".
Staff must be enrolled on HNAP by their Head of Department/Discipline.
Probation
All posts at the University are subject to probationary periods as detailed on the People Directorate Probation page
Academic Probation
Newly appointed academic staff in grades 6,7 and 8 are subject to a probation period of 3-4 years. The probation period for Academic staff may be reduced where there is evidence of a successful comparable probation in another UK University.
The SEED Probation Committee meets annually to review the progress of staff subject to academic probation, and to approve those who have met the probation criteria as having “passed” their probation.
Staff will be contacted in advance of the committee meeting to submit their CVs via the SEED Probation CV online submission form.
While research fellows and other independent researchers are not subject to a four year academic probation process, it is beneficial for the School Probation Committee to review their progress each year. This allows SEED to support their ambitions and progress, and mirrors practice in other Humanities schools.
