Learning & Development for Teaching Assistants

There is a range of learning and development opportunities for Teaching Assistants at the University.  These include mandatory courses delivered to all staff by the Directorate of People & Organisational Development (P&OD) via its Learning and Organisational Development (L&OD), and courses delivered by our Institute of Teaching and Learning (ITL) to ensure the student experience remains of the highest standard.  Faculties have also developed their own programmes of induction and courses specifically tailored for their own TAs.

Below are links for more information on the learning opportunities available to support your success at the University and your teaching career aspirations.

Courses for all new staff

All new staff to The University of Manchester are requested to complete Essential Courses for All New Staff, which is a self-enrol course available in Blackboard. Courses include Health and Safety at the University of Manchester, Fire Awareness for All, Office Safety, Understanding Export Controls, Data Protection and Cyber Security, Diversity in the Workplace, Unconscious Bias and Disability Equity. New staff are requested to work through all courses.

Learning & Organisational Development delivers a range of online and in-person courses for staff; you can find links to access the courses online or reserve a place on them at: Learning & Organisational Development | Programmes and Courses. There are a host of other opportunities for personal development open to all staff, so have a browse of L&OD's A-Z and check out the resources in the online self-development platforms where you can find playlists of resources curated by the L&OD team.

Institute of Teaching and Learning opportunities

Online resources from the ITL

The Institute of Teaching and Learning has pulled together resources around:

  • Delivering Blended Learning
  • Assessment
  • Supporting Students

The resources can be accessed at: https://www.staffnet.manchester.ac.uk/umitl/resources/

Note these are for all staff involved in teaching and learning, so some may not be relevant to the specific activities you are required to deliver as a Teaching Assistant, but of interest to you in terms of further development for a career in teaching and learning.

Events

You may also be interested in attending events from the Institute of Teaching and Learning.  Information about these can be found at: https://www.staffnet.manchester.ac.uk/umitl/events/ and they are normally announced on Staffnet and on Faculty communications channels.

Leadership in Educations Awards Programme (LEAP)

LEAP (Leadership in Education Awards Programme) supports you in documenting and evidencing your teaching excellence, and is an opportunity for you to receive a formal, national qualification for your teaching.  It is divided into 4 pathways and Teaching Assistants from the Faculty of Biology, Medicine & Health* may want to consider following the pathways for either “Associate Fellowship” or “Fellowship” of the Higher Education Academy, which is a national qualification the Institute of Teaching and Learning awards on behalf of AdvanceHE.

*The Faculties of Humanities and Science & Engineering have each developed a local LEAP pathway for their respective Teaching Assistants.  For more information, see 'learning opportunities within your Faculty', further down this page.
