Health and safety training

Training courses are intended to supplement, not a replacement, for face-to-face training and supervision. All staff and students must be trained by their line manager or supervisor to carry out their work safely, and must be supervised until considered to be competent.

A personal record of all training must be kept, this may be requested for audit purposes.

University training and development for staff and postgraduate students

The University offers a diverse open programme of health and safety courses which include:

FBMH Health & Safety Training Resources on Canvas

Online training resources for Faculty staff and postgraduates have been developed by the Compliance and Risk Team; these can be accessed via Canvas. There are two separate spaces for staff and students.

All FBMH PGRs are automatically enrolled in the FBMH Health and Safety Training Resources (Students).

Each module is intended as a supplement, not a replacement, for face-to-face training and supervision. To meet the Faculty's commitment to high standards of safety, we strongly recommend that all staff and students complete the sessions that address the hazards that they may face in the workplace.

  • Induction for office-based staff - provides an induction to health and safety for office-based staff.
  • Chemical Safety – how to use, store, transport, and dispose of chemicals safely.
  • Chemical spills - how to respond to chemical spills, including the location and use of spill kits.
  • PPE – correct use and selection of personal protective equipment for your work.
  • Safe use of sharps - what sharps are, and how to use and dispose of them safely.
  • Thermal and cryogenic burns - the prevention and management of thermal and cryogenic burns in the laboratory
  • Chemical burns - the emergency management of chemical splashes on the skin and eyes in the laboratory.
  • The principles of risk assessment: Part 1 – principles of general risk assessments. 
  • The principles of risk assessment: Part 2 – COSHH and DSEAR risk assessments.
  • Biosafety in the Laboratory - safety awareness covering the safe use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), pathogens, cell cultures, and clinical samples.
