Advice for managing respiratory illness this winter

13 Oct 2023

Now that the new academic year is underway and with the promise of colder weather to come, it's important that we continue to be vigilant about public health on campus

NHS managing illness

It's important we continue to look after ourselves and each other by practising good hygiene:

  • Wash your hands - this is one of the easiest ways to protect yourself and others from illnesses.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough and sneeze.

If you feel ill

Colleagues with symptoms of respiratory illness should inform their line manager and stay at home. We recommend people stay at home for at least 5 days after their symptoms first appear. If you can continue to work at home, you should do so.

Mask wearing

It is not mandatory to wear a mask but if you do wish to wear a mask on campus you can do so. Masks can be collected from Student Hubs across campus.

Vaccinations

Vaccination continues to provide the best protection against COVID and other respiratory infections such as flu. We strongly recommend everyone to get fully vaccinated or take up their booster dose if they are eligible.

Ventilation on campus

Good ventilation can reduce the spread of respiratory infections, including COVID-19. A good supply of fresh air is available by adjusting the openable windows and balancing this with appropriate clothing. If there are no windows or the windows are not openable, mechanical ventilation will operate automatically.

  • If you have any concerns about the ventilation on campus, please contact the Estates Helpdesk on ext. 52424 or by reporting online.
