Common Roles for Casual Workers

Casual staff are employed across multiple areas of the university, including:​

  • Examination Invigilators: Assisting during exam periods to ensure smooth administration and adherence to regulations.​
  • Event Support Staff: Providing assistance during events, conferences, and other university activities.​
  • Library Assistants: Supporting library operations, including shelving, cataloguing, and assisting library users.​
  • Sports Centre Assistants and Fitness Instructors: Working at facilities like the Armitage Sports Centre, assisting with sports activities and fitness sessions.​UoM Sport
  • Administrative Support: Performing clerical tasks such as data entry, filing, and general office duties.​
  • Student Ambassadors and Peer Mentors: Engaging with prospective students and providing guidance to peers. Ambassador is a one-year appointment and is available in each faculty.
  • Research Assistants: As required by Mentors/PIs with available grants

Key Characteristics of Casual Employment

  • Flexibility: Casual workers have no obligation to accept work, and the university has no obligation to provide work.​
  • Short-Term Engagement: Positions are typically for up to 13 weeks, suitable for covering peak periods or specific projects.​
  • Payment: Casual workers are paid monthly in arrears for the hours worked, with deductions for tax and National Insurance as applicable.​
  • No Continuous Employment Rights: Casual staff do not accrue continuous employment rights, and their engagement ends automatically after the agreed period.​

Recruitment Process for Students

To become a casual worker, students typically need to:​

  1. Application: Apply for advertised casual positions through Faculty/School recruitment portals. Be aware application process differs between schools
  2. Right to Work: This is verification of your right to work in the United Kingdom (passport/share code). This check can be completed by the school/faculty or by People Services. This check must be completed before working, including any training.
  3. Induction and Training: You must undergo any required induction or training specific to the role. Your Casual employer will be responsible for ensuring this training is given.
  4. Documentation: Along with the Right to Work check, you will receive an Appointment Letter by email from People Services with instruction to complete personal & pay details in MyView. You will require your usual university login details and DUO. Reply to People Services email when this is done.
  5. Timesheets: Hours worked will be submitted on CAS4 Timesheet form by the relevant deadline to Faculty/School administrators for submission onto the Casual’s Timesheet system. Schools will need to receive these forms by 5th of each month to be in time for payroll deadline.
